Is it Alpercatas or Alpargatas? The use of either term can vary depending on the geographical region and personal preferences. But the answer is: you can say it both ways! "Alpercatas" is the most common form in Portugal. While "Alpargatas" is more common in Brazil and some Spanish-speaking regions. Both terms refer to the same type of traditional footwear, usually made with a rope sole and a light, breathable fabric upper! So you can say/write it both ways. In the case of STRETS, we chose to use the term " alpercatas" because it is the most common form in Portugal, the country of origin of our brand.
What is the origin of alpercatas?Alpercatas are a traditional type of footwear with a long history dating back to various ancient cultures. It is believed that alpercatas were first worn in Ancient Egypt, around 4000 BC. At this time, the Egyptians wore sandals with a structure very similar to that of alpercatas, although at the time they were not yet known by that name. The first versions of these shoes were made from natural fibers such as jute or esparto, light and resistant materials that were perfect for wearing in hot climates. It is thought that the Romans, realizing the practicality of this type of footwear, adapted alpercatas to their culture. And with the expansion of the Roman Empire, alpercatas spread to other parts of the world. During the Middle Ages, alpercatas became popular throughout Europe, especially among farmers, fishermen and rural laborers, due to their affordability, functionality and durability. Alpercatas became especially associated with the region of Catalunya in Spain, and the term "alpercatas" is derived from the Catalan word "espardenya". In this region, these shoes were handmade by local craftsmen using specific techniques, which were passed down from generation to generation, and are still used and respected by some brands today.
