In the case of STRETS, we chose to use the term " alpercatas" because it is the most common form in Portugal, the country of origin of our brand.

It is believed that alpercatas were first worn in Ancient Egypt, around 4000 BC. At this time, the Egyptians wore sandals with a structure very similar to that of alpercatas, although at the time they were not yet known by that name. The first versions of these shoes were made from natural fibers such as jute or esparto, light and resistant materials that were perfect for wearing in hot climates. It is thought that the Romans, realizing the practicality of this type of footwear, adapted alpercatas to their culture. And with the expansion of the Roman Empire, alpercatas spread to other parts of the world.
